Vineyard notes:
Established over 50 years ago and devoted exclusively to Italian
varietals, Fox Hill Vineyard is located on the East side of the Ukiah
Basin. This Barbera was harvested from mature vines planted over 20
years ago.
Production notes:
Approximately two tons of grapes went into this lot. The fermentation
was fast and hot (5 days with temperatures about 28 deg C). On the
fifth day of fermentation, the sugar dropped from 20 deg B to 3! The
wine was punched down at 4 hour intervals until pressing. It spent one
month in tank until malolactic fermentation was complete. Then, the
wine rested in American oak cooperage for 16 months, until bottling.
Winemaker notes:
The wine has good acid and berry like aromas, muted only slightly by
oak vanilla.
Awards
In the 2003 State Fair, this wine was awarded a Gold
Medal and was selected by the judges to be theBest
Barbera of California.
